How to Replace a Lost U.S. Savings Bond

A lost savings bond doesn't have to mean lost money. If you've misplaced those U.S. Savings Bonds you got when you were a kid, you can still replace them. If you'd rather turn them in and claim their value, you can do that, too. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the institute where you purchased the bond if it was ordered and not received after 15 days.

    • 2

Narrow down the issue date of the bond if you don't know the exact date it was issued. Fill in the issue date, or a range of dates you can narrow the issue down to.

    • 3

Download a Form PD F 1048 from the Treasury Direct Website, or request that the form be mailed to you.

    • 4

Choose a replacement bond or payment for the bond when sending in the replacement form. Fill in the bond amount and bond number.

    • 5

Complete the form including the social security number, names and address on the bond. The bond replacement form must be signed by a certifying officer. The officer must be present when the form is being signed by the individual making the claim.

    • 6

Mail the completed form to the U.S. Treasury Bureau of the Public Department

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't have the bond number, you can still complete the replacement form.

  • To change a bond's registration, you need to have it reissued. You can't just have it replaced.

  • The original bonds belong to the U.S. Government once you have receive replacements. If you find lost or stolen bonds, they must be turned in to the Treasury Department.
