How to Use the I Ching for Divination

The I Chung is an ancient book and the concepts behind it predate written language. It is the ancient divination system of China. You can tap into the energy flow of the universe with the I Ching. The predictions of the I Ching are based on the 64 hexagrams of possible patterns for six Yin (broken line) and Yang (solid line). Yin and Yang balance define the potentiality of the future in the I Ching system.

Begin with the concept of Yin and Yang energy flow. To put it simply, Yang is male energy and Yin is female energy. When life is out of balance and tipped too much in one direction, the Universe will move energy from the opposite direction to counteract the overbalance. This is the nature of the divination technique.

Cast coins for one method of divination. Use heads to represent the Yang (positive) and tails to represent the Yin (negative). Calm the mind and when ready cast the six coins onto the table. Allow them to stop moving before reading.

Count the number of heads and tails. Write a hexagram based upon the coins. Choosing which coin is first and which is last is also part of the divination process. Draw a solid line for the Yang coins and broken line for the Yin coins.

Consult the book of the I Ching--the "Book of Changes." Each of the 64 possible patterns has an explanation. Find the pattern created by the cast coins. Repeating the divination process several times will produce different results. Proper divination does not include second chances and "do-overs."

Use the I Ching each day and note the hexagrams created daily. A person can begin to see the patterns of their life or at least the flow of Yin and Yang energy around their lives.
