Know that for a lot of true Scotch lovers, the only way to serve scotch is neat, that is without anything added to it. They feel that adding anything to scotch masks the aroma and flavor.

    • 2

Learn that scotch glasses for serving single malts usually have a large bowl, which captures the aroma. The glass then usually tapers up to a narrow neck to funnel the aroma to your nose, and the lip of the glass will be flared.

    • 3

Use ice if you'd like your scotch to be a cool, refreshing drink, but it does affect the aroma of the scotch. If you want to add water to your scotch, it's best to use spring water. Tap water usually affects the flavor of the scotch with it's chlorinated taste and smell. If you are really particular, your best bet would be to use the same spring water used to distill the scotch.

Realize that there are hundreds of cocktails that contain scotch. If drinking scotch neat isn't to your liking, you can probably find a cocktail that contains other things you like and will make the taste of the scotch a little less strong.
