An arbor sunshade adds not only shade to your deck or garden, but interest as well. The nice thing is that these arbors are not difficult to build. Read this eHow to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Dig four holes for the posts with a post hole digger. These holes should be 12 to 14 inches deep, and crushed stone placed in the bottom. Line the holes with sonnet tubes, which are available at your local building supply store or hardware store.

  2. Step 2

Cut 2 inch by 8 inch notches in two of the 4 inch by 6 inch posts. These posts will rest against the house, and the notches will accept the one of the supporting beams that hold the arbor roof.

  3. Step 3

Place four 4 inch by 6 inch redwood or pressure treated posts in the holes, and secure them by filling the holes with more crushed stone. Tamp the stones down as you fill the hole so that the posts are secure.

  4. Step 4

Use decking screws to attach four 2 inch by 8 inch boards about eight feet from the ground or surface of the deck. These boards act as the supporting beams on which the roof of the arbor rests. Have two boards on either side of the posts on each side of the arbor. One set of the boards will fit in the notches cut against the house.

  5. Step 5

Space the 2 inch by 6 inch roof boards 10 inches apart, and screw them in place.

  6. Step 6

Anchor the posts against the house with decking screws.
