For numerous reasons you may need to know the height of your deck, whether you are replacing the decking material, installing a hot tub or calculating steps to descend from the deck. Figuring the exact height is important to the overall finished look of your home. Calculating the height is done by applying a ledger board and working outwards from there. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • General builder's tools for your desired project
Step1
Install a ledger board, the board that runs along your house that will eventually support the inside of the deck, at a distance below your door threshold that is equal to the thickness of your decking material plus 1/8th inch. The additional space is to assure the easy opening and access of your door. For instance, if your decking material is 7/8th inches thick, you would measure downward 1 inch from the bottom of your door.
Step2
Level the ledger board with a bubble level to assure the finished deck will be straight. Make sure the level is very accurate since the decking will follow this template.
Step3
Build the frame for your deck and set the posts that will bear the structure. If any drop down levels are desired, they will be framed now, with a step down that is generally no greater than 8 inches. Calculate the outside height of the supporting posts by running a string line from the top of the ledger board. Use a level to make sure it is straight.
Step4
Lay your decking material in the desired pattern. Attach with decking screws as per manufacturer's recommendation.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remember that in determining deck height to work from the inside to the outside. The ledger board is the first step and the rest can be constructed in accordance.
  • If you are installing a deck to fit under an Americans With Disabilities Act door, you will need to consult the door manufacturer for specifications.
  • If the decking material is a solid surface you will need to adjust the outside height downward at the rate of 1/4 inch per every 8 feet to accommodate water runoff.
