How to Compare Airlines Safety Records

When you are ready to travel by air, you start by looking for cheap tickets and specials online. The price of your ticket should not be your only consideration. Sometimes a bargain ticket price is no bargain at all. Check your airline's safety record before you plop down your hard-earned money for a seat on a plane that may not be safe. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the aviation safety network web site to check the safety record of the airline that you are flying. They list airlines by country. You can also type in the name of the airline that is offering your bargain ticket. Use the links on this site to get more detailed information.

    • 2

Get the facts about airline traffic, problem airports and aircraft maintenance violations at the Federal Aviation Administration's site. These factors contribute to airline safety too.

    • 3

Review the National Transportation Safety Board website's record of airline accidents. The NTSB has records of all airline accidents since 1982. They update the records monthly.

    • 4

Check the NTSB data on the size of the aircraft for carriers that have been involved in the greatest number of airline accidents and passenger fatalities. Compare the crash records of larger aircraft to the records for smaller ones.

    • 5

Visit airsafe to see a list of airlines that have had no passenger fatalities since 1970. Compare the number of accidents and safety violations that have occurred on the airlines that you are considering for your flight.

    • 6

Use this information in select your airlines. If the ticket you're considering is on an airline that has recently accumulated a number of violations or had a number of accidents you may need to consider paying a few dollars more for a ticket on an airline with a better safety record.
