Check with your local school district as the first resource. Ask for referrals to different programs and schools for truant or troubled youth. Consult with the guidence counselor for suggestion for alternative schools.

Talk to organizations for runaway youth, programs through juevnile justice system or vocational programs. Search the internet and create a list of places to further investigate. Home schooling is a popular choice and many programs are available online. Arm yourself with multiple choices from which to choose a school.

Decide whether you want a day school or a boarding school before contacting anyone. Some of these schools may be far from where you live. Select the best option for your teen. Narrow down your list and avoid wasting time on schools fail to meet the established criteria.

Contact all the schools on your list. Find out if any of the schools offer counseling services and their academic standards. Determine if they have curfews and disciplinary procedures and policy.

Take your top two to three schools and visit them. Meet the teachers and coordinators to see if the school fits your expectations. Bring your teen with you or go alone. Encourage the teen to participate in the selection of the school, whether or not your teen is agreeable to the visit.
