Tile can enhance the look of a home as well as add value to it. Whether you intend to complete a tiling project yourself or have it done by a professional, proper planning is the key to selecting the right tiles and achieving the results you want.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Determine the best tile size to use for the project. The right choice depends on the size of the area to be covered. Tile squares measuring 4 1/2 inches work well in small bathrooms; they're also easier to cut and fit around fixtures.
Step2
Create paper patterns to predetermine how to mix plain tiles with decorative ones. Cut out tile-sized pieces of paper mimicking the tiles you want to intermix. Use painter's tape to attach the paper squares to the wall or floor, moving them around until you create a pattern you like. It's best to keep the decorative tiles at least one tile away for the corners of a room to prevent distracting attention away from the central areas of the pattern.
Step3
Know that glazed floor tiles are typically rated by manufacturers. Single-glaze ceramic tiles are generally harder and more durable than double-glaze tiles. Floor tiles can be rated for durability with numbers ranging from one to five, with five being the most durable. Look for tiles that come with a performance guarantee.
Step4
Consider that glazed tiles also can be a good option for areas exposed to excessive moisture and water. Glazed floor tiles typically have a low water-absorption rate, and some can even be used for outdoor projects.
Step5
Estimate the quantity of tiles needed for the project by measuring the length and width of the area, expressing the final measurements in whole tiles. Multiply the two final figures and add 10 percent to allow for necessary cutting and possible breakage. Alternatively, use a tile calculator offered online by home-improvement websites. To use the calculators, you typically need to enter the dimensions of the project area along with the size of the tiles you intend to use.
