The joy of owning an antique painting can be somewhat marred if the painting is in a hideous frame. Incorporating an antique painting into your décor can be fun and challenging. Modern sensibilities have long sought refuge in classic designs and the richness of antiques is pleasing to almost all art palettes. If you choose to reframe an antique painting you must be careful that you do not destroy the whimsy of the original framing sentiment.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Consider leaving the painting in its current frame when it's undamaged. Reframing an antique painting can be perilous and result in damage to the painting. If it's at all possible, leave the painting in its original frame.

  2. Step 2

Choose to reframe when the frame is detestable, takes away from the value of the piece, or is cracked or damaged beyond repair. Proceed with caution as you may be taking a calculated risk. Enlist advice from a professional and explain you're going to do it yourself.

  3. Step 3

Look at the area where you plan on displaying the painting. Gaze at the painting itself. Notice colors and textures, as this helps with selection of a suitable frame.

  4. Step 4

Take the painting to a reputable framer that has experience in reframing antiques. Obtain recommendation from satisfied customers or business owner's with prior experience with the framer.

  5. Step 5

Discuss your vision with the framer. Talk about the emotions or mood you wish the frame to convey and what styles you prefer. Listen to the framers advice, however, ultimately the final choice is up to you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Avoid going to a chain craft store. While these folks are certainly well equipped to frame your latest family photo, they usually don't have the expertise to handle an antique.
  • Do not mat the painting. Real paintings do not require matting.
  • Don't attempt to reframe to painting yourself unless you have a great deal of experience framing canvas. It is not the same as framing a print and requires a skilled hand.
