Americana quilts are very popular; they demonstrate your national pride and complement Early American decor. Although flags often come to mind when we think of Americana designs, any quilt in red, white and blue can have an Americana theme. Follow these steps if you would like to make an Americana quilt.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric
  • Quilting thread
  • Regular thread
  • Rotary cutter
  • Ruler
  • Mat
  • Iron
  • Batting
  • Quilting pins
  • Quilting pencil
  1. Step 1

Choose an Americana quilt pattern. There are several types to choose from. Sunbonnet Sue sells a 50-state Americana quilt pattern that comes complete with state patches that can be transferred onto hexagon blocks. You will also find quilt patterns that feature flags, and others that are simply red, white and blue. It will be difficult to choose only one.

  2. Step 2

Purchase your fabric according to the pattern directions. Of course, you'll be choosing red, white and blue fabrics. Cotton is generally a better choice.

  3. Step 3

Consider adding special decorative touches to your quilt. For example, you might use white buttons to indicate the stars on a flag design. Americana quilts lend themselves to these types of decoration.

  4. Step 4

Expand the Americana theme that you've created with your quilt. Hang red, white and blue berry garland around a doorway, or scatter red, white and blue throw rugs around the room. Tin stars and country signs will complete the look.
