Finding ways to speed up Windows Vista is on the minds of many computer users. Operating systems are notorious for packing on unneeded extras and fluff that slow a computer way down. Savvy technicians and power users can tweak Windows Vista enough to make a visible difference in operating speed. Use the tips below to speed up Windows Vista.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ensure that all of the peripheral equipment is operating in harmony with Windows Vista. Vista has many quirks and issues with incompatible items. Having too many USB connections or an older printer might be enough to really confuse the operating system.

  2. Step 2

Make sure that all drivers are up to date. Most newer computer programs and add-ons have their own automatic updating software built in to periodically check their manufacturer's website to keep the item running smoothly. Windows Vista also offers driver update program to check an item or program's compatibility.

  3. Step 3

Turn off Aero. Although this one item is the cornerstone of neat, turning it off delivers a very large system boost. Aero utilizes a great deal of system resources simply by being on.

  4. Step 4

Switch off the sidebar tool. This is also a memory killer and truly isn't necessary to the computer's functionality. Anything running in this toolbar should be scrutinized as to its value of being open as well.

  5. Step 5

Look for technical tweaking tools. ReadyBoost® is a tool that incorporates a USB thumbdrive to add a simple random access module. This frees up system memory and space and uses the USB module instead.

Tips & Warnings
  • Speed up Windows Vista by uninstalling any or all of the pre-installed programs that may have come with the computer.
  • Frequently manage the hard disk drives by keeping them defragmented and running smoothly. This means keeping the disks cool and clean physically as well.
  • Never install programs and applications that the user does not understand. Some programs can actually install viruses or worms that will further slow down the Windows Vista operating system.
