GE Monogram Refrigerator: Troubleshooting Guide

John Stevens J.D.

General Electric's Monogram refrigerators have a smooth exterior appearance and a number of user-friendly control options that are easy to access. Although General Electric is known for producing reliable appliances, problems can develop with any appliance, including the Monogram. Fortunately, once the problem is identified, it's usually quite simple to fix.

Motor Runs Continuously or Frequently Turns On and Off

Most problems associated with a Monogram refrigerator require only minor adjustments.
  1. Give the unit a minimum of 24 hours to cool down if it has just been installed.

  2. Inspect the interior of the refrigerator and freezer for packages that may prevent the door from closing completely.

  3. Anticipate frequent on/off cycling in hot weather.

  4. Raise the temperature of the refrigerator and/or the freezer because both may be set to their coldest setting. Both temperature controls are located at the top of the refrigerator's interior. Press the "+" button next to each control to raise the temperature. Note that it may take 24 hours for the temperature to adjust.

Water Dispenser Fails to Operate

  1. Unlock the water dispenser. Press and hold down the "CONTROL LOCK" button on the refrigerator's control panel for three seconds.

  2. Make sure that the refrigerator's water supply line is connected to the back of the refrigerator and that the line is free of any sharp bends.

  3. Replace the water filter because it may be clogged with sediments. The water filter is located at the top of the refrigerator's compartment. Twist the water filter cartridge in a counterclockwise direction until it disconnects from the refrigerator. Fill the replacement cartridge with water. Line up the arrow stamped into the side of the filter cartridge with the tab on the top of the filter's housing inside the refrigerator. Twist the cartridge in a clockwise direction in the housing until the filter snaps into place. Press the "RESET FILTER" button on the refrigerator's control panel for three seconds to reset the indicator light.

  4. Press the water dispenser's arm with an empty glass for a minimum of two minutes or until water steadily exits from the dispenser to bleed any air present in the dispenser's water supply line.

Ice Cubes Have a Strong Odor or Taste

  1. Discard the ice cubes because they may be old.

  2. Empty and wash the ice cube storage bin.

  3. Seal any open food packages because odors from open packages can penetrate the ice.

  4. Place an open box of baking soda in the refrigeration unit. The baking soda will absorb some of the food odors as the air circulates between the refrigerator and the freezer. Replace the baking soda box every 90 days.

Refrigerator's Light Fails to Turn On

  1. Ensure that the refrigerator's power cord is plugged into a working electrical outlet.

  2. Turn the master light switch to the "ON" position. The master light switch is located behind the grill panel at the top of the front of the unit. Lift the panel to access the switch.

  3. Allow time for the lights to cool if the door has been open for some time and the lights have suddenly turned off. To prevent the lights from overheating, a safety switch automatically turns the lights off if they become too hot. Once the lights have cooled, they will automatically turn on when the door is opened.
