1
Choose a schoolhouse quilt pattern. You can buy a pattern at most quilt shops or from an online store. Marti Mitchell's site allows you to download templates for a schoolhouse pattern.
-
2
Select your fabrics. Vibrant primitive colors, like red, work well for the schoolhouse, and light-colored fabrics offer a nice background. Your border prints should pick up at least one of the colors in the schoolhouse.

3
Wash and dry your fabric. Iron it, but don't use spray starch.
-
4
Cut your pieces out using a rotary cutter and templates. Most patterns allow for 1/4-inch seam allowances.
-
5
Sew the quilt top together and iron your seams. Attach your batting and backing fabric with quilting pins. Using your quilting thread, sew small stitches in the seams around the schoolhouse and in your borders.
-
6
Bind the 3 layers of your quilt (top, bottom and inner padding) together via whichever stitching method or pattern you prefer, and enjoy it as a wall hanging or bed quilt.
