Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Fabric
  • Rotary cutter
  • Ruler
  • Quilting thread
  • Regular thread
  • Mat
  • Iron
  • Batting
  • Quilting pins
  • Quilting pen
  1. Step 1

Choose a pattern with large geometrical color fields. Amish quilts do not generally employ patchwork patterns.

  2. Step 2

Pick a pattern that has a striking central design in a narrow border, surrounded by a wide outer border. The binding on an Amish quilt is usually in a contrasting color.

  3. Step 3

Purchase fabrics in deep, rich, saturated colors. Use black pieces of fabric as an accent. Most Amish quilts are made of cotton rather than wool.

  4. Step 4

Avoid representational imagery and patterned cloth, since they are not used in traditional Amish quilts.

  5. Step 5

Go to a website like Amish Country Quilts to view some traditional Amish patterns. Diamond in the Square is a popular one.
