How to Buy a Siberian Husky Puppy

Siberian huskies are the domesticated breed of dog perhaps most closely related to their wild wolf ancestors. Free spirited and hardworking, huskies make a great addition to any family as a pet or companion. As with any dog breed, there are certain things that you need to look for when shopping for a Siberian husky. Here are some tips to help you buy a Siberian husky puppy.

Instructions

    • 1

Expect color variations. One of the most unique traits of the Siberian husky breed is the tendency for dogs to have eyes that are two different colors. While many huskies have eyes that are startlingly pale blue, many others have eyes that are blue and brown or blue and green. This variation is not a sign of ill health; in fact, it is a very desirable trait in the breed.

    • 2

Inspect the dog's tail. The Siberian husky's tail curls upward into a tightly coiled spiral in a very distinct shape. When examining husky puppies, make sure you look at their tails and look for that distinct curl. A puppy whose tail is slack or does not curl tightly might be malnourished or in ill health and must be inspected further.

    • 3

Request pedigree papers. Some Siberian husky breeders try to keep the breed closely tied to their wolf cousins by breeding them with wolves or wolf hybrid dogs. While wolves are beautiful creatures, a puppy that is part wolf might not be the best choice for a family pet. Request the puppy's papers from its breeder and ensure that both of its parents are full-blooded huskies and registered.

    • 4

Look for energy and vitality. A puppy that seems disinterested or lackluster in your presence may be dehydrated, malnourished or sick. Look for "typical" puppy behavior: energetic playfulness and happiness to see people. Huskies are sociable dogs, and a husky puppy should appear very excited to see you and want to interact with you. If it does not, something may be wrong.

    • 5

Observe interaction with other dogs. Huskies are pack animals at heart and function best in the presence of one or more canine companions. Even if you are only planning on buying one puppy, observing how they react to other puppies will tell you a lot about their socialization skills and personality.

I own a wolf hybrid (30% wolf) and they are great dogs. They have all the same traits as huskies but calmer. My husky is a little timid around new people (especially in closed places) but she is a great dog! Most people don't even know she has wolf in her and I honestly don't tell a lot of people because they would just freak out. But I agree they aren't for everyone. Talk to the breeder before getting one!
