How to Grow Angelica

The angelica herb is used in medicine for treatment of fevers, colds, flatulence, colic and many stomach issues. Angelica is also said to strengthen the heart. It is a biennial herb, which means it is a short-lived perennial plant. This herb blooms in July and produces a small oblong fruit.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Sow angelica seeds in moist, fertile soil. The angelica herb grows best in shady areas. This plant grows in full sunlight but dies in the second year.

  2. Step 2

    Water the angelica herb often. It requires continues moist soil to prosper. Check the plant every two to three days. If the soil begins to dry, add water.

  3. Step 3

    Fertilize the herb at least twice during the growing season. The preferred fertilizer is the use of plant spikes.

  4. Step 4

    Harvest angelica when the stems are tender and young. The roots need to be harvested carefully so they do not damage the plant. Dry and preserve the roots before use. The stalks of the plant are edible. Angelica herb has a similar taste to celery and is sometimes preserved with sugar for a candied angelica.

  5. Step 5

    Cultivate new angelica plants from the seeds. Cuttings from angelica do not normally take root. Also, angelica seeds do not last long in storage.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not eat the fresh root of the angelica plant. It is said to be poisonous. Dry the root before using it.
  • Do not use angelica if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
