The acacia catechu, or cutch, tree is a large, thorny tree with flowering bark and seeds that are often used for herbal medication. The acacia catechu is indigenous to India, China and other parts of Asia. The bark from the acacia catechu is used for dying material, fishing nets and leather tanning.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Plant your tree in an open area. The acacia catechu does not flower or root in the shade. If you grow an acacia catechu in an area where the temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, wrap the trunk and the top of the tree to protect it during the winter months.
Step2
Feed your tree every two to three weeks for your tree so it reaches it's potential and blooms. Use a limited amount of nitrogen in the food. The soil needs to be rich with hydrogen.
Step3
Water the acacia catechu when the soil around the tree becomes slightly dry. If the leaves begin to whither, water the tree. If your climate is very dry, spray the leaves with a light mist of water every week.
Step4
Cultivate new trees from cuttings or the seeds of the acacia catechu. Soak the ends of the cuttings in warm water with a few drops of growth hormones so the tree roots.
Step5
Prune the tree every year between May and August. The acacia catechu blooms from spring to fall. The tree has long thorns on the limbs.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when pruning the tree to avoid hurting yourself on the thorns.
