Aquarium stands are available in kit form, but to get what you want for far less money, you can build your own. Below are some basic instructions to follow for building a sturdy aquarium stand that can support your tank.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Use 4-by-4 boards to construct the frame for the aquarium stand. Measure and cut four pieces for the top, four for the base and four for the legs. Nail the top front board to the two top side boards, forming two corners. Then attach the top back board to the sides to frame the top section.

  2. Step 2

Repeat Step 1 for the bottom section of the frame. The length and width of the finished bottom section should be identical to the top. Attach the leg pieces to the corners of the bottom section, aligning them so the edges are flush. Nail the top section of the frame to the top of the legs for a complete enclosure.

  3. Step 3

Add two support pieces to the bottom of the frame that run front to back. Cut these from a 2-by-4 and distance them evenly away from each side. Add a support piece to the middle of both the front and back of the frame. These align with the outside edge of each section and help support the weight of your tank. The front support piece also frames the doors of the aquarium stand.

  4. Step 4

Make side panels and doors from 3/4-inch board. Cut the side panels slightly larger than their openings and attach them with wood glue and nails from the inside of the frame. Center the door pieces over the front openings and secure them with hinges.

  5. Step 5

Cut a piece of 1 1/2-inch board for the top of the aquarium stand. This supports the aquarium and must be flat and strong. Attach this piece so the edges are flush with the frame. Again, use wood glue before you nail the top on.
