Having a child is a whole new world. Open sockets become attractive places to put tiny fingers, and light switches become a temptation too difficult to resist. You must install tamper-proof light switches.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to your local hardware store or building supply store and look in the light switch section. Sometimes the tamper-proof light switch may be in another area, so you might have to ask for help.

  2. Step 2

Unscrew the screw or screws that keep the conventional light switch cover over the switch. Carefully put the old light switch aside and save the screws. You may wish to use it again on the switch when the tamper-proof light switch isn't needed.

  3. Step 3

Line up the holes of the tamper-proof light switch over the ones in the switch. Insert the screws that came with the tamper proof light switch and tighten them until the tamper-proof light switch is secure.

  4. Step 4

Lock the switch plate closed and keep the key that comes with the tamper-proof light switch in a safe place. If the tamper-proof light switch is for the light in a child's room, keeping the key on the lintel outside the child's room is a good place, for it will be out of reach of the child but not of the parent.
