It seems that doctors spend less time with patients than ever before. Sometimes patients don't even see the actual doctor. Because the time we have with doctors is short, it's important to make a doctor's visit count. Prepare for the visit by following these steps to make the doctor's visit more productive.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Schedule morning appointments. Phone for an appointment first thing in the morning, and ask for the earliest appointment of the day. Doctors are less rushed in the morning, and the staff isn't as tired. You'll also spend less time in the waiting room if you have an early appointment.
Step2
Get to your doctor's appointment early. If another patients is running late, you may get to see the doctor sooner. Being early also gives you time to handle insurance cards, fill out forms, and take care of co-payments in advance.
Step3
Describe carefully why you're visiting the doctor. You'll be asked this when you call for the appointment, when you arrive at the office, and again when the doctor sees you. Have your symptoms thought out in advance to save everyone more time.
Step4
Tell the scheduler if you need to see the doctor and not just the nurse. Making this known at the time you call for the appointment will save you time at the office and prevent possibly needing to make another appointment and pay another co-pay.
Step5
Make a list. Write down what your concerns are while you're still at home and have time to think about them. List every detail that you can think of. Be sure to stay on target of the reason for your visit. Write down any prescription refills you need.
Step6
Inform your doctor of all the medications you're currently taking. This should include prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements. Make a list to help you remember all of them. Be sure to include the dosages in your list.
