We now associate the craft of origami with Japan and the most common origami symbol is the crane, which stands for good luck. Decide what kind of origami tree you would like to make. You can use a bare-branch tree for every-day decor or dress up a Christmas tree with origami shapes. You can even create your own origami Christmas tree to decorate.

Find a book of origami patterns. Make sure it is at a skill level that is comfortable for you to use, or it can become frustrating very quickly. Take your time looking through the book at the patterns and directions to assure that you will be working with shapes you like and that the directions are clear.

Choose the materials you want to work with. Origami paper is a thin paper that usually comes in packages containing various colors. Origami paper must be square to start out with and these packages are pre-cut. You may also decide to use recycled paper or newsprint.

Find out what the various colors of origami paper symbolize. For example, red means love, blue represents faith and honor and white symbolizes hope and purity. The animals or other shapes have meanings also, such as the butterfly which stands for one's spirit. Decide which you would like to use on your tree.

Decorate your tree. Evenly space the origami figures around the tree, creating a beautiful, colorful and interesting decoration. It also makes a wonderful conversation piece as you explain the meanings of the colors and figures to your guests and children.
