How to Make a Felix the Cat Costume

Felix the Cat began his career as the first cartoon movie star way back in the 1900s. This black cat was so famous that he was even Charles Lindbergh's mascot during his transatlantic flight and was the first balloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Still popular, try making a Felix the Cat costume for a surprisingly different look for Halloween or any time.

Get a general idea of Felix the Cat's look. He's a black cat with a white face and very large eyes. Pictures of Felix the Cat can be found all over the Internet by simply searching for his name and clicking on "images."

Make the outfit. Since Felix the Cat's body is entirely black, there are several ways this look can be accomplished. Those more experienced at sewing can make a suit out of faux black fur. This can be hot, so it would be great for cooler weather. Use a pattern for a sweatsuit for an easy pattern to sew. An easier way to go about this is to just purchase a black sweatsuit or even black pants with a black pullover long-sleeved shirt.

Create a tail. Felix the Cat has a black tail that is very long. Purchase a yard of black fabric and sew or use fabric glue to make a long tube, being sure to keep it open at one end. Stuff the tail with fiberfill and sew it shut. Attach the tail to the pants with a safety pin or by sewing it on.

Form the face. Felix has a round head that is big in proportion to his body. Make a large papier-mâché sphere and let it dry. Cut out a hole in the bottom large enough for a head to fit through and eye holes for viewing. If the head is very large, cut out the mouth and put in sheer black fabric to look out of. Paint on his eyes and nose, using pictures as guidance.

Finish off the Felix look by putting on black gloves and black shoes. Fuzzy black house shoes make great cat feet.
