Pennyroyal is not a culinary herb, but it is worth growing for several other reasons. Mainly, it is one of the best natural insect repellents, and it smells better than many commercial insect repellents. It is a durable plant which will survive periods of neglect.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Sow pennyroyal seeds in spring to have plants in the current growing season or in late fall if you want plants first thing the following spring. If you live in the far northern United States or above, it is best to plant pennroyal in the spring. Barely cover the seeds with soil, planting them only 1/8th of an inch deep.
Step2
Plant pennyroyal in a dedicated spot in the garden. Pennyroyal is an aggressive spreading herb which sends shoots out from its roots from which new plants pop up. It takes over its surrounding space, so plant in dedicated beds or grow it in pots. If growing in pots, choose at least an 8-inch pot.
Step3
Grow pennyroyal in full sun or partial shade. Pennyroyal is adaptable to many light conditions, but does not thrive in full shade.
Step4
Keep the soil around pennyroyal moist. Pennyroyal can tolerate periods of drought, but for best results with the herb, water once every few days to keep the soil moist.
Step5
Reseed pennyroyal every spring or fall. Pennyroyal is occasionally hardy, but does better if you start over fresh every year.

Tips & Warnings

  • Place pennyroyal in around patios and outdoor gathering areas. The herbs scent keeps bugs away from outdoor picnics and parties. Consider keeping a pot of pennyroyal around so you can move it to any location.
