How to Get Support for Parents of Asperger's Children

Children with Asperger's syndrome have difficulty finding and maintaining friendships. With at least two out of every 10,000 children exhibiting characteristics consistent with a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome, there are many parents in need of a support network. Fortunately, various support networks exist to help parents navigate through the maze of medical services most children with Asperger's syndrome need.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a team of professionals to provide treatment for your child. Your child may need a developmental pediatrician, counselor, speech and language pathologist, teacher, school psychologist and occupational therapist.

    • 2

Visit Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support, or O.A.S.I.S. This site offers links to various worldwide support groups.

    • 3

Identify support groups in your areas. Contact your school district's special education department, pediatrician, developmental pediatrician or counselor for referrals to support groups.

    • 4

Obtain support online by joining one of the many Asperger's syndrome support groups. Go to yahoo groups and enter the search term "Asperger Syndrome." A list of various support groups will appear.

    • 5

Attend Asperger's syndrome classes or conferences to learn more and meet other parents. Go to the website for MAAP Services for Autism and Asperger Syndrome. Click on the "The Next MAAP Services Conference" link to see a list of classes and conferences offered.

HELP! I have a 15yr.old son with Aspergers. We are in the middle of teenage years and whatever comes with Aspergers. Right now, he is filled with mostly anger, frustration, need for a social life. He looks to me (mother) or dad to fulfill that need. We can't. He needs his own life. He has watched older sisters do the teenage thing: friends, dating, jobs, etc. He knows all, the differences, the pros/cons, Aspergers... Because of anger managment issues coming on the heels of great frustration, he has be hospitalized twice. As his parents, we need support, help, suggestions. We need contact with other families. ARE YOU OUT THERE? SINCERELY, TK-MOTHER

Managing a team of individuals and organisations responsible for your child's well-being can be tiring and headache-inducing. I find that having friends and family to vent to can help, as can internet forums for parents in similar positions.
