Wine tours can be a fun and exciting way to learn about Australia's many wines. Touring the wineries of this rugged country will give you a unique perspective into what comes out of the bottle. Go outback and indulge in a few glasses.

From Quick Guide: Winery Tours
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rental car
  • Updated map and guidebook
  • Good-quality walking shoes
  • Hat and sunscreen
  1. Step 1

Pick which area of Australia you want to visit. Australia is a huge country so unless you have many months to explore, you will have to narrow down your choices. The 4 main wine regions are Western and Southern Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. All have many different valleys and vineyards to visit.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether to go on an operated tour or do it yourself. There are many different tours available that can be booked online (see resources) or reserved once in the area. Most organized tours will provide transport and some include accommodation. If you choose to visit wineries on your own schedule, arrange transportation and lodging.

  3. Step 3

Use your time well. Tours can be any length from a few hours to several weeks. Select which one best suits your needs according to the time you have available and the region or regions that you are planning to visit. Find out what you can about the tour and winery beforehand.

  4. Step 4

Stay on track if you are planning to self-drive by making sure you are equipped with an accurate map and guidebook. There are mapped routes (see resources) that incorporate several different wineries along the way.

  5. Step 5

Combine your winery tour with a city break in one of Australia's cities or a more rugged "out back" experience to get the most from your trip.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask about group discounts if traveling in a large party.
  • Take high-factor sunscreen and a wide brimmed hat to combat the Australian sun.
  • Always drink in moderation and have a designated driver if using a vehicle.
  • Rented vehicles in Australia will probably be stick shift and right-hand drive; request an automatic transmission in advance and make sure you will be able to drive on the left-hand side of the road.
