A logical tabletop color theme for a Christmas party is red and white. You don't need to spend hundreds of dollars in order to make a smart and inviting dinner table. It is easy to get carried away when trying to decorate a Christmas theme table, so remember that simplicity is key to a fabulous holiday tabletop.
Choose a solid red tablecloth to be the background for your tabletop theme. Red is usually a better choice than white for the tablecloth due to the fact that spilled food and drinks are more easily hidden.
2
Use simple white plates at each place setting. If your party is more relaxed than formal, you can still follow this theme with sturdy, white disposable plates.
3
Tie small red ribbons into bows around red and white striped candy canes. Fold red napkins (cloth or paper) in half and place one napkin on the center of each plate with a candy cane on each napkin.
4
Buy white poinsettias and place them in a white basket in the middle of the table. Tie red ribbons around the pots as an accent. Depending on the size of your table, you may want to add a few red poinsettias as well for accents.
5
Add red and white votive candles around the basket. Make sure you don't place them too close to the flowers.
Tips & Warnings
Throw a few cinnamon-scented pinecones into your flower centerpiece to create a warm, winter feel. Don't put too many in, or the aroma may be too overpowering.
Consider the size of your table before using flowers as a centerpiece. White and red votive candles scattered throughout the center of the table can be just as beautiful.
You can follow this same theme for a Valentine's Day dinner as well. Change the candy canes to red and white heart-shaped chocolates and the poinsettias to heart-shaped topiaries, or simply use candles.
