How to Go to Trinidad

The island of Trinidad is the southernmost of all the islands in the Caribbean. It is actually just a few miles off the coast of Venezuela. Geologists think the island was once part of the land mass of South America. It's easier than ever to go to Trinidad from the U.S. Just pick your vacation dates, hop a flight from your hometown and enjoy the rich culture and year-round sunshine.

1. Get basic information about the country and highlights of the tourist attractions at the official Trinidad tourism website Visittnt. You can find other useful travel information and current news here too.
2. Check out the calendar for Trinidad's annual Carnival celebration. The date changes every year, like Mardi Gras. It's important to keep this date in mind, when planning your vacation, because hotels and flights fill up months in advance.
3. Use the hotel guides at Frommers to get an idea of hotel costs and ratings. Several major international hotel chains operate properties in the capital, Port of Spain. Budget hotels and comfortable guest houses also abound throughout the island.
4. Select your possible vacation dates and check available flights from your departure city. Several U.S. airlines, American, Continental and Delta, offer direct and connecting flights from major cities. The National airline of Trinidad, Caribbean Airlines, provides frequent service from the U.S. and special fares through their website.
5. Plan your travel departure and return at least six months before the expiration date on your passport. U.S. citizens need a valid passport to enter Trinidad. You also need one to re-enter the U.S. now. U.S. visitors to Trinidad do not need a visa.
6. Consider your transportation options before you arrive. Generally, it's safe to travel by taxi. They are pleasant and convenient. Public transportation is limited to hot overcrowded mini-buses and intra-city buses.
7. Rent a car ahead of time, if you are comfortable with right-hand drive vehicles. Trinidadians drive on "the wrong side" of the road. Rental car rates and insurance fees are higher than U.S. costs for comparable vehicles.
