How to Pick Ammo for Turkey Hunting

Turkeys are a very intelligent animals and hunting them takes some amount of skill. Hunters will either choose a traditional shotgun to hunt turkeys or even bow hunt these birds. Most hunter's supply or sporting good stores will have an adequate supply of ammo for all kinds of hunting. Here are some tips on how to pick ammo for turkey hunting.

  1. Step 1

    Decide on the method of hunting. Using a shotgun to hunt turkey requires shot shell ammunition for the gun. A number 6-turkey load is typical ammo for the task. Two ounces of pellets per shell is common.

  2. Step 2

    Choose a bolt or arrow for the turkey ammo if bow hunting. Arrows or cross bow bolts typically have a broadhead tip that allows for a greater area of impact and damage.

  3. Step 3

    Pick a shotgun matched for the hunt. A common shotgun for turkey hunting is the 12-gauge model. Others include the 20-gauge for closer hunting techniques and the 16-gauge.

  4. Step 4

    Use a turkey ammo size that best fits the hunter. If recoil is an issue, go with a lighter gauge shot. Many hunters use a 3.5-inch shell that delivers a strong kick. Use a 3-inch shell for younger hunters.
