If you have allergies, then it is most likely that you showed signs of the allergies during childhood. Allergies in children can cause them to break out in rashes or show symptoms of hay fever. There are several medications available by prescription or over the counter to treat a child's allergies.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make an appointment with the child's pediatrician. A pediatrician can run tests to determine the type and severity of the child's allergies. They may also offer to give a prescription for treatment.

  2. Step 2

Limit your child's exposure to known allergens. Clean regularly in order to remove dust and avoid smoking in the house. Strong perfumes and colognes can also initiate an allergic reaction.

  3. Step 3

Monitor the pollen levels. Websites, such as the Weather Channel, provide a breakdown of the pollen levels that your area is experiencing. During peak periods, reduce the amount of time that the child plays outside.

  4. Step 4

Keep the windows closed in the house, especially at night. An opened window can worsen the child's symptoms.

  5. Step 5

Give an over the counter antihistamine. Benadryl comes in a children's form. Follow the dosage information on the package and only give it at night since it may cause drowsiness.

  6. Step 6

Inquire about a prescription if the child is still not finding relief. Available medications include chewable tablets as well as Veramyst, a prescription strength nasal spray.

Tips & Warnings
  • If the child is under the age of two, consult a doctor before you give the baby a dose of Benadryl.
  • If you suspect the child has a food allergy, the way to treat this is to eliminate the food item from her diet.
