How to Groom a Sealyham Terrier

Sealyham Terriers are playful and fun, but not overly hyperactive. Although they are sometimes aggressive toward other dogs, they usually get along with fellow pets. They have long, hard coats of pure white or yellow-white hair. They require a full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks and a general grooming at least once a week.

Things You’ll Need:

• Slicker brush
• Pin brush
• Metal comb
• #5 blade
• #10 blade

1. Seek professional help for this breed. Unless you have been extensively trained in hand stripping, you need to see a professional groomer in order to style a Sealyham Terrier correctly.
2. Brush out the double coat, (the underside of which is very thick and soft and the top part of which is coarse and hard), with slicker brushes, pin brushes and metal combs, as needed. This breed sheds very little hair, if any.
3. Use a #5 blade to trim the body, back, tail and sides of the dog. Use a #10 blade on the stomach, head, neck and ears.

Tips & Warnings

• Sealyham Terriers have a life expectancy of roughly 15 years.
• This breed can tolerate living in an apartment, as they are relatively complacent indoors and they do well in a cool climate. They are not high energy, and a short walk will be enough to tire them out.
• This breed was created in Wales in the mid-1800s by Captain John Edwards. He mixed hounds, the Dandie Dinmont, the Basset of Flanders, the Corgi, the West Highland Terrier, and the Wirehaired Fox Terrier in order to get what is known today as the Sealyham Terrier. It was officially recognized as a breed in 1910.
