Step 1
Find an old wrecker car such as an Oldsmobile Cutlass. Strip off everything that can be unbolted including the engine, transmission, doors and fenders. Save everything as you may need it later.
-
Step 2
Take out all the glass. Wear eye protection and gloves before taking the hammer to the windows. You can also call a windshield repairman to do this if you want to save yourself the clean up afterwards.
-
Step 3
Remove the top of the car using a sawzall. Keep it in good condition as you will be replacing it after installing the protective cage.
-
Step 4
Spray the whole car with engine cleaner. Leave it on overnight. Take the car to a local water blaster car wash bay and spray it down to remove tar, body sealers and paint.
-
Step 1
Paint the chassis of the street stock race car. Use an off-white color to make it easier to work on the car under low-light conditions. You can get this paint at your local do-it-yourself store, such as Home Depot.
-
Step 2
Weld 1.5-by-0.065 inch thick square tubing about 5 inches long to the chassis for spacers. Weld three on each side with the first ones welded 8 inches back from the front of the chassis. The second set should be welded 18 inches back from the center and the last one 13 inches forward from the rear.
-
Step 3
Set the body of the street stock race car on to the chassis. Screw a body-mount bolt into the four corner holes. Shift the frame as far back as possible to keep the weight to the rear of the car.
-
Step 4
Fit and install a cage kit onto your street stock race car. This will protect the driver in case the car rolls. Replace and weld the roof of the car.
-
Step 5
Purchase an engine and transmission from a motorsports shop. Use an engine hoist to unload them upon delivery. Install them into the race car.
-
Step 6
Reassemble the car using the parts that were removed. Some parts may need to be replaced if they were old or worn.
