If you want to try out a new recipe or something different from your standard fare, then stuffed tulip petals may be for you. While it may be strange to eat flower petals, it's important to remember that much of your diet is plant-based anyway, so you're eating flowers all of the time even if it's not ones you're used to having decorate your dinner table.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 3 oz low fat cream cheese
  • 1 tablespoon snipped chives
  • 1 tablespoon minced dill or mint
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice and grated zest
  • dash of cayenne pepper
  • 5 oz. (1 cup) fresh or frozen crabmeat, flaked
  • 10 thin asparagus spears
  • 30 tulip petals

Step1
Combine all of the ingredients minus the asparagus and tulip petals.
Step2
Steam the asparagus lightly and then briefly place them in ice cold water.
Step3
Cut the tips off of the asparagus and save for later. Then cut the rest of the asparagus into ¼ slices.
Step4
Clean tulips gently making sure you don't break or tear the tulip petals.
Step5
Chop off ¼-inch of each tulip petal where it was attached to the stem of the plant.
Step6
Fill each tulip with ½ teaspoon of the crab mixture.
Step7
Place a couple of the asparagus pieces on top of the tulip petal and crab mixture.
Step8
Use the asparagus tips as garnish. Place other appetizers on the plate and serve.

Tips & Warnings

  • Break the tough ends of the asparagus spears off.
  • Use some red cup-shaped tulip petals to make a really nice presentation.
  • Stuffed tulips make a beautiful addition to a special Easter or spring buffet table.
