A midwife or doctor will check a woman's cervix for dilation to help determine if labor may soon start. The cervix will soften and dilate to allow for the baby to be delivered vaginally. The rate at which a woman's cervix dilates varies greatly. It tends to be a bit slower in first pregnancies. The cervix is measured in centimeters. When the woman's cervix has dilated to ten centimeters she usually will start pushing.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tell the woman to relax. She should be instructed to take slow deep breath. She can practice any breathing techniques she learned in childbirth preparation classes. If a woman relaxes and allows the muscles of the vagina to relax it makes the cervix check easier and more comfortable.

  2. Step 2

Wash the hands thoroughly. This is essential to prevent introducing bacteria into the vagina. Surgical gloves should also be placed on the hands to further ensure cleanliness.

  3. Step 3

Use a lubricant. A generous amount of a lubricant such as K-Y Jelly should be placed on the fingers. This will help reduce any discomfort to the woman.

  4. Step 4

Position the woman to allow for a check of the cervix. Most women will be comfortable on their backs. Instruct the woman to bend her knees and allow them to fall to the side. If a woman has received an epidural and is having trouble moving her legs she may need some assistance holding her legs apart.

  5. Step 5

Gently insert one or two lubricated fingers into the vagina. Feel for the opening of the cervix. Determine how many fingers would fit into the opening of the cervix. If two fingers are being used for the cervix check spread them apart to determine dilation. Each finger is considered one centimeter.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep in mind dilation of the cervix is only one indicator of labor.
  • Expect some light spotting after a cervix check for dilation. Heavy bleeding should not occur and should be reported to a healthcare professional.
  • Physicians advise a woman refrain from checking her cervix for dilation. She may cause an infection.
