So you're not sure you want to purchase snowboard equipment until you've at least made it down the mountain a time or two. Fortunately, there are several options for renting snowboards. Rent from equipment shops or from ski resorts to try snowboarding with several boards before you commit to buying your own.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Personal identification
  1. Step 1

Look up numbers to local outdoor stores, ski and snowboard supply stores, and the actual resort where you'll be snowboarding.

  2. Step 2

Contact each location. Ask about the cost of rental and the sizes and types of boards available.

  3. Step 3

Visit the local stores to try on equipment for sizing, unless you decide to wait and rent from the ski resort.

  4. Step 4

Select boots that fit your foot snugly. Both your heels and toes should be in contact with the boot. Your ankle should feel sturdy and supported.

  5. Step 5

Choose between step-in bindings and strap-in bindings.

  6. Step 6

Select a snowboard appropriate for your experience level, height and weight. Most locations will offer at least beginner and freeride/freestyle boards. Stand the snowboard vertically. It should come up to roughly between your nose and chin.

  7. Step 7

Decide on a rental package. Ask if the shop offers equipment insurance. Carefully read through the shop policy and fill out the necessary paperwork. Be prepared with personal identification in case the shop requires it.

  8. Step 8

Pack your snowboard, boots and proper snowboarding attire, purchase your lift ticket, and enjoy snowboarding. Return all rented equipment to the specified location in a timely fashion.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask about discounts for multiple-day rentals.
  • If you have never been snowboarding, consider taking a private or group snowboarding lesson. Sometimes resorts offer deals on rental packages that include a lesson.
  • Wear proper snowboarding attire, such as insulated snow pants, a ski jacket, sunglasses or goggles, and a helmet.
