How to Communicate With a Wife

There are many old wives tales and proverbs about how to have a happy marriage. Communication is key in making any relationship work, especially a marriage. There are times, however, that you may not know how to effectively communicate your wants and needs to your wife. A little planning and change in your past habits can give you the results you want when communicating with your wife.

Instructions

    • 1

Drop the dismissive "Yes, Dear". If you want your wife to listen to you, make it a point to listen to her. Conversations are more genuine if each person knows their side of the conversation is really heard.

    • 2

Make a date. Have uninterrupted time set aside each day or week to talk about important things. Both you and your wife can come prepared to talk and listen to important things concerning finances, family and feelings.

    • 3

Stop before the fight. If you have a concern or problem to address with your wife, do not try to have the conversation when things are busy or you both are upset. Wait until you both have time to calm down and talk rationally.

    • 4

Know when to take a break. Couples can become gridlocked into a problem, stuck where neither party will really listen, compute, or compromise. Set the problem or discussion aside and give her, and you, time to think about the problem and possible solutions.

    • 5

Be kind. Frustration sets in easily with those we love the most, especially with spouses. Do not use hurtful words or "push her buttons" when trying to communicate about any issue.

    • 6

Apologize, even if you don't want to. If you know you have done or said something wrong, just apologize. Most of the time, your wife just wants to hear you admit that you acknowledge your wrongdoing, no matter how small it is.

    • 7

Use words instead of actions. It may seem easier to buy a bouquet of flowers or plant nice hints into daily conversation and routines, but if you want to communicate something, use your words.
