How to Get Admitted to a Foreign Medical College

Rate: (1 Ratings)

The majority of foreign medical schools are far easier to enroll in than those in the United States. This doesn't necessarily mean that you will get an inferior education. Many aspiring doctors from the United States attend medical schools in Europe, the Caribbean, India and Mexico. Getting accepted to a foreign medical school requires some research and advance planning.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Transcripts
  • MCAT scores
  • Recommendations
  • Passport
  • Visa
  • Tuition and fees

Step1
Visit the Student Doc website to get information on the major factors to consider during the process of selecting a foreign medical school. It has useful links to a number of schools outside the United States.
Step2
Compare the admissions criteria and graduation requirements of foreign medical schools to medical schools in the United States. Consider schools whose degree programs and courses provide sufficient preparation for the residency and certification requirements for practicing in the United States.
Step3
Review information about the United States Medical Licensing Exam required for physicians whose degrees are granted by non-U.S. medical schools. The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates administers this exam and certifies applicants who intend to practice medicine in the U.S.
Step4
Decide if you are willing to study in a foreign language or if the school's language of instruction must be English in order for you to succeed.
Step5
Register at The Association of American Medical Colleges to take the Medical College Admissions Test. Unless otherwise stated, this exam is part of the application for admission to quality foreign medical school.
Step6
Request applications from at least three schools. Carefully compare the admissions requirements, residency requirements, tuition and fees and expenses, including housing and travel costs. Complete admissions applications and submit required fees, test scores and transcripts.
Step7
Apply for a student visa, if required by the country where you intend to pursue your studies. Make arrangements for transportation, housing and shipping. Make sure that your passport is valid for the required length of time.
