How to Protect a Floor From Chairs

Floors in your home can add rustic charm to a room provided they are properly maintained. Scuffed floors as a result of moving furniture and scratching chair legs can ruin an entire rooms appearance. It's best to perform a little preventative maintenance to preserve your home's charm. Here are a few tips to help you protect your home's floors from chairs.

1. Attach self-stick, felt-tip protectors to the bottom of all chair legs. Felt-tip protectors come in various sizes to accommodate any size chair leg. If you're unsure, you can always purchase a large size and then cut it to the size you need.

2. Affix casters to the chair legs. Casters should be used on those chairs that are moved more frequently than living room furniture, but less frequently than an office chair. Kitchen chairs for example, are moved towards and away from the table. Casters allow for smooth chair sliding. You can use them interchangeably with the self-stick felt tips to protect your floors.

3. Install wheels on office chairs. Unlike dining room chairs, you move office chairs from left to right, frontward and backward regularly. Zipping from the copy machine to the computer can wreak havoc on your home's wood floor, if you don't have the appropriate wheels on the bottom.

4. Place a plastic floor mat for office chairs with wheels to protect your floors. Although wheels are less damaging to floors, a protective cover helps to mitigate the wear and tear on the floor.

5. Put an area rug underneath formal dining room sets. This serves a two-fold purpose. In addition to adding a decorative flair to the room, it also protects the floor beneath it.
