Step 1
Avoid taking photos in a dark area.
-
Step 2
Place a tissue over the flash so that it softens the light. You can also use a flash diffuser. This decreases the range of your light, however, so you may need to move closer to your subject.
-
Step 3
Take a second or third picture as the first picture will cause the pupils to contract. By causing the pupils to contract, the reflection from the retina is reduced. The retina is covered with tiny blood vessels, which is why the reflection from the light is red.
-
Step 4
Position your camera near a light source, as this aids in the pupil's contraction thereby reducing the red-eye effect.
-
Step 5
Make sure the lights in the room are turned on.
-
Step 6
Instruct the subject to not look directly at the camera. If taking pictures of pets or babies, you can try to divert their attention elsewhere.
-
Step 7
Edit digital photos using photo-editing software. Most of the current software has a built-in feature that will automatically remove red eyes from photos.
