Even oily skin requires a moisturizer, as these lotions provide essential nutrients, not only moisture. Besides, hydrating your skin is about water moisture, not oils. However, using the wrong moisturizer on oily skin can actually increase oil and shine, or block pores, causing a reaction in your skin. Choose a moisturizer based on these tips.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read the label. Most moisturizers adjust their ingredients based on the needs of their customers, and these adjustments are cited in the labels. Purchase products specially formulated for oily skin for best results, as cited on the label.

  2. Step 2

Check with pros. Get the advice of a esthetician, cosmetic counter employee or dermatologist. Each of these professionals has a different type of expertise, but each should have suggestions based on past use, special training or other clients' advice.

  3. Step 3

Speak with those you trust. As with any product, speak to those around you for their feedback and recommendations.

  4. Step 4

Combine treatments. If you want to get rid of that oily skin and not just moisturize it, look for products that double up their usefulness by adding ingredients to limit oils, such as glycolic acids.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cosmetics counter employees, although well-trained in cosmetics and facial products usually want to sell you their products exclusively. Be sure to get a second opinion before buying.
  • Be careful of the label "noncomedogenic." Although most people view this word as positive for those with oily skin, the government doesn't regulate its use. Many companies conscientiously label their products, but other don't.
