Trapping black widow spiders is not unlike trapping brown recluse spiders. Both species will respond to special, spider sticky boards that are commonly available at your local hardware or grocery store. Invest in a batch of these stick boards to trap active spiders in your home.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Visit a hardware or grocery store.

  2. Step 2

Buy sticky boards specially designed to trap black widow spiders. Look for foldable boards that contain ingredients that attract black widow spiders to the trap. Sticky boards that are used to trap brown recluse spiders will also work with black widow spiders.

  3. Step 3

Unwrap the boards. Read the directions on the package. Fold the boards as shown on the instructions. While some sticky boards can be used flat, folding the boards will provide a better trap for the black widow spiders. Folding also protects children and pets from any spiders that become trapped on the boards.

  4. Step 4

Place the boards near doorways, windows, cracks, crevices and other possible black widow spider entryways. Note the places in your home where you regularly see black widow spiders and place sticky boards in those areas, too. Put a few boards in attics, closets, and other dark, warm and undisturbed places like under heavy furniture.

  5. Step 5

Check the sticky boards regularly. Black widow spider bodies will accumulate on the sticky boards and will need to be disposed of.

  6. Step 6

Use gloves to lift the sticky board. Discard the board outside and in a place that is far away from your home. You may want to tightly wrap the sticky board in a trash bag before disposing of the sticky board in an outdoor trash can.

  7. Step 7

Exercise caution when removing a live black widow spider on a sticky board. It only takes one, quick bite to injure you or make you ill.

Tips & Warnings
  • Black widow spiders enter homes very rarely. However, don't encourage black widow spiders to enter your residence by piling up wood or debris near your home--especially next to windows, doors, cracks, crevices or other areas where a black widow spider might crawl in.
