Whether your love of animation is rooted in sentimental memories of Saturday morning cartoons or your love is connected to your understand of the craftsmanship of animation, collecting the art is a possibility for you. As with any type of art, collecting animation is an investment, but it is one that pays off in time if you make wise choices.

Step1
Decide what type of animation art you are interested in collecting. Animation art is a broad field that spans many types of art and traditions. For instance, there are traditional animation cels, contemporary reproduction cells or anime work available to collect.
Step2
Become familiar with the terminology associated with collecting animation art. Some terms to know are: production cel, production drawing, limited edition hand-painted cel and background setup. The Art-Collecting website contains definitions about animation art terminology.
Step3
Visit museums that specialize in animation art. Visiting a museum that shows only animation art gives you an idea of what type of animation art is out there. It also helps you decide what specific type of animation art you want to build your collection around. In the United States two such museums are the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco and The National Cartoon Museum in New York.
Step4
Subscribe to arts publications such as Animation Magazine, Theatre et Animation and ArtNews. These publications list galleries, shows and other useful resources devoted to animation art.
Step5
Find galleries that specialize in animation art that are willing to assist you in obtaining the art you are looking for.
