Warm up fast this winter with a hot springs vacation. There are popular hot springs spread throughout the United States. Most are inexpensive, and some may even be free. Escape to the desert and visit some Southwest ghost towns. Grab a metal detector and go treasure hunting, or pan for gold. It will be warm enough to camp even in winter, or you can call ahead for rates for inexpensive off-season lodging.

Become a beach comber. It's great exercise, and you never know what treasure will wash up on the beach, especially during the stormy winter months. Camp in a nearby campground, or stay at a motel that offers discounted rates for off-season travelers. If it's permitted, build a campfire on the beach and cook hotdogs and s'mores.

Plan a winter hiking trip. Winter is a great time enjoy the great outdoors, and the scenery is especially beautiful. If you're feeling especially adventurous, try hiking with show shoes. If you don't mind braving the elements, and you have a sturdy tent, warm clothing and warm sleeping bags, you can try winter camping, making it a very adventurous, but budget-wise outdoor vacation.
