Come summer, it's time to have some fun on the water. Personal watercraft are now a very popular water sport. They might seem a little powerful when you first get on one, but with these tips and a little practice, you'll have no trouble riding a personal watercraft.

From Quick Guide: Jet Skiing
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Mount the personal watercraft from the rear. Mounting from the side while in the water will cause the craft to tip over.

  2. Step 2

Attach the lanyard to your life vest or around your wrist. Attach the other end to somewhere on the watercraft, usually on the handlebars near the ignition.

  3. Step 3

Activate the choke, which is usually a button or lever near the gas tank. Next, press the start button or turn the ignition. You may need to apply the throttle gently to start the engine. Once the watercraft starts, release the choke.

  4. Step 4

Use the throttle lever to propel yourself forward. The harder you depress it, the faster you'll go.

  5. Step 5

Turn the handlebars to the left or right to steer, as you would a bicycle. Note that to turn, you must be propelling yourself by using the throttle. Without the throttle, you will only go forward, no matter which way you turn the handlebars.

  6. Step 6

When you are done, turn off the ignition or press the stop button. Also, detaching the lanyard from the watercraft will shut off the engine.

Tips & Warnings
  • When riding as a passenger, hold onto the driver, or to a strap on the seat if one is provided.
  • Always read the owner's manual and abide all laws while riding a personal watercraft.
  • Always practice proper personal watercraft safety.
  • Never turn sharply at high speeds.
