Spam is essentially the electronic version of junk mail. The basic definition of spam is unsolicited email which is sent to multiple users. Just like the various pieces of unsolicited mail you receive in your postal mailbox, your email box may be inundated with electronic junk email or spam on a daily basis unless you take precautions to block spam. Earthlink email users have a number of different options available to them for blocking spam.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Use Filters to Block Spam on Earthlink Email

  1. Step 1

Open the Earthlink 5.0 browser and select "Mailbox" from the Tools menu.

  2. Step 2

Select "Edit Filters" from the Mailbox menu.

  3. Step 3

Decide whether you want to use the standard spam sentry junk mail filter or the more aggressive spam sentry junk mail filter. The standard filter is adequate in most cases, but the more aggressive filter may be required in extreme situations where spam is a big problem.

  4. Step 4

Read the information about the spam filter you selected and click "OK" if this filter provides adequate protection for your needs.

  5. Step 5

Click the "Close" button to exit.

  6. Block Spam on Earthlink Email by Installing spamBlocker

  7. Step 1

Install spamBlocker by following the installation directions supplied with the software.

  8. Step 2

Open your Earthlink Mailbox and click on the plus sign next to spamBlocker to expand the folder.

  9. Step 3

Click on "Settings" and select either the "Suspect Email Blocking" option or the "Known Spam Blocking" option. The "Suspect Email Blocking" option offers the highest level of protection by only allowing email messages sent by those in your address book to reach your inbox.

  10. Step 4

Select the "Save Changes" button to save your changes and begin using spamBlocker to minimize the amount of spam in your inbox.
