Satellite radio is a great way to listen to music, talk, comedy and just about anything you want. Only two satellite radio providers are available right now--XM and Sirius. Both are similar with slightly different programming. Both offer various hardware packages for listening. If you are just using your radio in your vehicle, then an in-dash radio receiver and antennae is the best for consistently good sound.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check out the programming of each before you decide on which service to subscribe. You can find the listings of programs on the satellite radio web sites. Choose the provider that offers you the most choices for the programming you enjoy.

  2. Step 2

Talk to friends who have in-dash satellite radios already. Ask their opinions and request a ride to see for yourself how easy or difficult the operation is and how it sounds.

  3. Step 3

Ask the salespeople in the stores about the features of the various radios. Though in many retail outlets, the employees are not necessarily trained in the operation of satellite radios, they talk to enough people to develop some pretty good idea of which units work best. They also see returns and hear about problems their customers have faced.

  4. Step 4

Set a budget for your satellite radio. If you have an idea of how much you are willing to spend, that can narrow your choices. Then compare prices and quality of systems online and in the electronic stores.

  5. Step 5

Consider the price for installation in your budget. If you need professional help installing your new XM or Sirius radio, then you will want to find out the costs. You may get a great deal online, but free installation if you buy from a retail outlet. Weigh the costs.
