Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Hold the party outdoors if possible to complement the active and energetic theme, providing the children with a great place for play. Outdoor options include your own back yard, a local park, or wherever the kids can run around and expend lots of energy. A nearby basketball court at a local park can be great; as an added bonus, the kids can shoot some hoops. Bring along a miniature hoop for the little kids.
Step2
Use the basketball theme from start to finish. Local party stores and tons of online venues should sell cups, napkins, plates, plastic utensils and much more to get your party off on the right foot. Paper tablecloths and balloons are another idea.
Step3
Bake a round cake using a cake mold, available at most places selling cooking items. Decorate with bright orange icing and number-shaped candles marking either the child's age, or the child's favorite basketball player's number. Another alternative is cupcakes frosted with "basketball" tops.
Step4
Entertain the kids with basketball drills turned into competitions. You'll simply a basketball or two and an adult coach or referee. Having a referee shirt and whistle will really get the kids excited. Some drills to use include: Dribbling for the longest time with eyes closed, shooting free throws, dribbling to a cone and back, granny shots, etc.
Step5
Play a game of "HORSE" using "PARTY" instead. Only a basketball and hoop are required. A shooter is designated to go first; he or she tries to make a shot from anywhere. If the shooter makes the shot, the next player needs to make the same shot from the same place. If they also make it in, the next player needs to do the same, etc. Players accumulate letters of the word "PARTY" by the following actions: missing a shot following a shot that was made, shooting from the wrong position and using the wrong technique. Because there are five letters to "PARTY", a player has five chances to miss before they are out of the game. The last player left is the winner.
Step6
Feature a basketball pinata. Pinatas are always loved by kids, and a basketball-shaped one goes over even better!
