Step 1
Wear your seatbelt. The statistics are earth-shattering when you hear of how many fatalities occur because they were not wearing their seatbelts. While a seatbelt may feel uncomfortable or irritating, it's worth it.
-
Step 2
Stay awake while driving. When people work late night shifts or come home from late night parties, it may be hard to stay awake. If you feel like you are too tired to keep your eyes open, it's not safe to drive.
-
Step 3
Keep your windows down so that the wind keeps you awake or turn on your air conditioner if you're tired. Also, turn the music on loud so that you remain alert while driving.
-
Step 4
Follow the speed limits. Speeding is a factor in many car accidents. To stay safe when driving, you should always obey the speed limits. In icy and wet conditions, drive under the speed limit.
-
Step 5
Bring along some emergency items in case something goes wrong when driving. If you do get stranded somewhere, it's best to carry a cellular telephone with you at all times. Other emergency items include but are not limited to a flashlight, a help sign to put on top of your car, a spare tire, a map and food.
-
Step 6
Give your keys to someone else if you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Never drive when you are intoxicated.
