Step 1
Check your IM application for a chat log feature. When you enable chat logs, your instant messenger will automatically save all chats you have in a dedicated folder on your hard drive. You can choose the location of this folder and go through it to delete chats you don't want to save, keeping only the ones you want.

Save individual IM sex chats using the "Save" feature on your instant messenger, if it has one. When you do this, you will normally be prompted to choose a file name and a file format to use to save the conversation. Give the chat an appropriate name that allows you to remember its contents with relative ease, and pick a file format your computer has the capability to open later.

Log sex chats you have in Internet Relay Chat (IRC) chat rooms using your IRC client's log feature. Just as with dedicated instant messaging applications, you can toggle the chat log on and off on most IRC clients. If you aren't sure how to do this, consult the "Help" menu or join a help channel to ask an expert.

Step 4
Copy and paste the sex chat into a separate document if you don't have a means of saving it directly. This also allows you to edit the conversation down to the parts you really want to keep, eliminating the boring stretches where you got up to get yourself some crackers and a soda and the other person had to answer a phone call.

Go through your saved chats now and then to keep the folder where you store them clean, and delete any sex conversations you don't need or use. This saves storage space on your computer and also reduces the chances of another person finding your saved chats.
