The Nintendo Wii ranks as one of the most popular consoles on the market, outselling both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The list of games it offers is extensive, and the inclusion of the Virtual Console effectively makes any prior Nintendo game available to new audiences. Classic NES games are already available, as are SNES titles. The good news is it's even possible to use a NES controller on the Wii for a full retro experience.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Classic NES controller
  • Wii/NES controller adapter
  • Nintendo Wii
  • Classic NES titles
  1. Step 1

Get a classic NES controller from an online auction website or from a specialty game store that carries retro video game products. They're usually inexpensive by themselves, although they can get pricey if part of a complete, original NES set.

  2. Step 2

Plug the NES controller into the matching port on the adapter. The NES side of the adapter looks like seven ports lined up straight, with four on one side and three on the other.

  3. Step 3

Plug the GameCube port adapter into the Wii at the GameCube controller port.

  4. Step 4

Use your NES controller to navigate the Wii menus as you normally would using a regular Wiimote. It may be necessary to start your Wii using the Wiimote, but you can then switch to the classic NES controller once you're up and running.

  5. Step 5

Choose a game from the virtual console that you wish to play. Try to avoid using the classic NES controller with SNES games, however, as the classic controller lacks the two top bumpers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Note that the NES controller adapter is fully plug and play, allowing you to plug it in and start gaming right away. There is no need to "map" the buttons to make it compatible with conventional game controller layouts.
  • Be aware that the Wii/NES controller adapter is different from the USB/PC controller adapter. The Wii adapter features a prong design specific to the Wii's "GameCube" controller port. The USB version will only work on PCs.
  • Be aware that the classic NES controller would be of no use for games requiring the Wii's motion sensing controller. Classic NES controllers are ideal for the Virtual Console.
