Intermediate bondage enthusiasts are those who have played with bondage tape and cuffs and are ready for more intense bondage with ropes, chains and furniture. It's good if you already know how to tie knots for bondage, but if you don't you can learn.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Get a quality cotton or nylon braided rope, such as clothesline. Cut it into varying lengths of about 8 feet to about 20 feet. You'll want lengths to tie your partner's wrists together, ankles, knees and possibly her wrists to her ankles. You might want to secure those ropes to a wall or piece of furniture, thus requiring the longer lengths.

  2. Step 2

Learn how to make simple harnesses without knowing a single knot. Symtoys.com tells you how to do simple Japanese rope bondage (shibari) that looks as beautiful as it feels (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Take a bondage knots tying tutorial. One that clearly explains how to tie a variety of useful knots and includes quality photographs is kinkyropes.com (see Resources below).

  4. Step 4

Discover how to bind your submissive once you have mastered knots. Some ideas include crossing your sub's ankles or wrists, tying his ankles to a spreader bar and leaving his legs far enough apart to hobble but still too close for him to walk.

  5. Step 5

Incorporate other bondage gear into your rope bondage. For example, you could tie your submissive to the bed using ropes and place a hood on his head to intensify the experience or use a gag to silence him. Try using chains, hooks and locks in addition to rope and knots.

Tips & Warnings
  • Practice tying and untying knots until you can do them in your sleep. This will enhance your skill and facilitate safety. If you need to untie your submissive quickly for any reason, you will be able to do it.
  • Keep bandage scissors and a sharp knife handy to cut the knots in case of emergency.
  • If you're a beginner intimidated by rope, scarves may seem like a great stepping-stone. Do not tie up your partner with scarves--they are difficult to loosen once knotted and can cut off circulation. Instead, keep scissors handy and use the scarves only to blindfold or lightly gag your partner to explore light bondage.

on 1/11/2010 Mmmmm. Sexy. Though I am into some strange things, I do believe that using anything sharp to cut ropes isn't wise. My Dom carves me, some very beautiful designs. But that is safe, and well taken care of.

on 4/1/2009 I use knives every day in my job and practice juggling with them, I am very comfortable with knives. The one time my bottom got in trouble, all I had handy was a knife (my mistake I am usually more cautious and have safety sheers). that was one of the most nerve wracking things I have ever done. I second Neuraljam Never use a knife

on 1/18/2009 A sharp knife?! Never, ever use a knife to cut someone out of bondage, there have been cases where the sub has got into difficulty, the Dom or Top panics, and fatally stabs the sub whilst trying to get them free... and that's just with normal scissors! Only use bandage scissors/saftey shears, or something else with a rounded end rather than a point.
